Without the generous support of volunteers from all over Central Ohio, it would not be possible to provide all of the programs and services that The Salvation Army offers. 

Each year hundreds of people volunteer to help the needy through several programs.  If you would like to help, please contact us about any of the following opportunities:

After School Learning Centers

Volunteers are needed to provide one-one-one tutoring to students in need of extra individualized attention, speak to a group of students about life experience and/or to chaperone students on field trips.

Age Requirement: Minimum age 18

Time Requirement: Volunteers are required to volunteer a minimum of once a week for 3 months.

Dates/Times: Monday through Thursday, 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Career Enhancement Center

Volunteers are needed to perform light clerical work and to assist the Career Enhancement Center staff.

Age Requirements:  Must be at least 16

Dates/Times:  Varies

Christmas Cheer

Volunteers are needed to register families for the Christmas Cheer program prior to the event.  Volunteers are also needed to work at distribution, sorting canned goods, filling food boxes, working in the toy shop area and checking in families as they arrive.

Age Requirement:  Minimum age 13

Dates/Times:

Registration - the week before and the week after Thanksgiving
Monday and Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Tuesday and Thursday, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Registration - any of the five Worship and Service Centers
Citadel - 409 S. Grant Street
East Main - 1289 E. Main Street
West Mound - 2300 W. Mound St.
Worthington Woods - 720 Worthington Woods Blvd.
Linden - 3167 Cleveland Ave.

Distribution - DiSalle Center on the Ohio State Fairgrounds

Coats for Columbus

Volunteers are needed to sort coats, hang coats and help families shop for their coats during the distribution.

Age Requirements: Minimum age 16

Dates/Times:  Various days and times from mid-September through mid-November

Heat Share

Volunteers are needed to meet with applicants, determine eligibility and complete application forms.  Volunteers are also needed to help compile statistics and schedule appointments.

Age Requirements:  Minimum age 16

Dates/Times:  April to May, Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Locations:  All 5 Worship and Service Centers

Heart To Heart Weekend Meals

The Heart To Heart Weekend Meals program provides hot, nutritious meals every Saturday and Sunday evening, year round, to the homeless community.

Volunteers are needed to help prepare meals to be served on the canteen.

Age Requirements:  Minimum age 16 (unless accompanied by adult)

Dates/Times: 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday

Red Kettle Bell Ringer

Volunteers are needed to ring bells at the Red Kettles.

Age Requirements:  Minimum age is 16 (unless accompanied by adult)

Dates/Times:  November 15th through December 24th various times, Monday through Saturday.

Locations:  Various Locations around Central Ohio.

Senior Food Box Distribution

Each month, commodity food boxes are provided to 1,200 low-income seniors.  The food boxes are delivered to the five Worship and Service Centers and the seniors come to the centers to pick up their box.

Volunteers are needed to unload and load the food boxes.  Each box weighs 35 pounds.

Age Requirements:  Minimum age 16

Dates/Times:  Third Monday of each month from 10:0 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and the following Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Other Opportunities

Throughout the year there are other opportunities for volunteers, including but not limited to answering phones, helping in the food pantries, clerical help and landscaping.

There is no set schedule for this type of volunteer work, however, all volunteer hours fall between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Volunteers will be placed on a case-by-case basis.
